To win the Best Offbeat Beach Award, a beach needs to boast an abundance of character and charm. It has to be a one-of-a-kind destination, a place with shops and restaurants like you’ve never seen before. Visitors should feel like they have been transported someplace slightly magical and off-kilter; they should be filled with a sense of wonder; they should be eager to discover what surprise lies around the next bend.

The 2012 winner of this prestigious award, Captiva Island, has all these features in spades. You can sit in a giant chair and then wander down the block and try on odd hats, some with eyeballs hanging off of them. You can eat in a place where it’s Christmas all year long; you can bid on racing crabs at another. You can admire unique art and sculptures or nosh on Grouper sandwiches at an outdoor cafĂ©. And it goes without saying that the beach is sweet.

You've got to visit!

Insider’s Disclosure: I made up this award, and I picked the beach that won it, too. But I’ve seen a boatload of beaches, and Captiva is truly wondrous.
